Intensive outpatient for Orange County
Real treatment that respects your calendar.
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is part-day clinical sessions, several days a week — individual therapy, group therapy / group sessions, psychiatry and medication management as needed, and coping strategies for emotional regulation. It’s the level most Orange County professionals and students choose when a partial hospitalization program is more than they can flex around, but weekly outpatient treatment isn’t enough.
Because sessions are concentrated, progress doesn’t depend on remembering a Tuesday appointment from last week. You’re in the building several times a week with the same small group and the same clinical team — behavioral therapy (CBT/DBT) woven through, plus dual diagnosis support when substance use is part of the picture. Individuals who need more structure can step up to PHP with the same team.
Many clients step down to IOP after PHP; others start here when mental health symptoms need more than outpatient but home stability is solid. Program depth lives on our national IOP page; this page is about commuting from across Orange County into that rhythm.

How the days work
What to expect during IOP in Orange County.
Part-day sessions leave most of the day intact — that’s the point of this intensive outpatient program.
Morning or afternoon
Your IOP block
Pick the track that fits your schedule. Part-day sessions of therapy, group counseling, and skills — then back to work, campus, or home across Orange County.
Between sessions
Life continues
IOP is built for people who can’t pause their whole life. You practice emotional regulation and coping skills in real time between sessions, not just in the building.
Weekly
Team adjusts
Your psychiatrist and therapist review progress every week and adjust the treatment plan — more sessions if needed, fewer as you stabilize.

Common questions
IOP questions from Orange County.
What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?
An intensive outpatient program is structured mental health treatment several days a week in part-day blocks — more than weekly therapy, less than a full PHP day. At High Tide in Laguna Beach, IOP includes individual therapy, groups, and psychiatry as needed while you live at home across Orange County. Deeper overview: /mental-health-guides/what-is-iop-mental-health and /programs/iop.
Can I keep working during IOP?
Usually yes — morning or afternoon tracks leave most of a workday intact. Many clients attend IOP while on reduced hours or remote schedules. If you need a fuller clinical day, see PHP in Orange County.
How is IOP different from PHP?
IOP is part-day sessions versus full clinical days (9 AM – 4 PM) in a partial hospitalization program. It’s less time away from life but still several days a week of intensive care with the same clinical team. Compare: /mental-health-guides/php-vs-iop.
How long does IOP last?
Length follows goals and progress — not a fixed package. Many clients then step down to outpatient mental health treatment near home.
Does insurance cover IOP in Orange County?
Most PPO plans cover IOP. Coverage depends on your plan and medical necessity — we verify benefits before you commit, free and confidential. Start at /insurance or read /mental-health-guides/does-insurance-cover-php-iop.
Can I start in IOP without doing PHP first?
Yes, when clinical assessment supports it. Many clients enter directly at IOP when symptoms need more than weekly therapy but full PHP days aren’t required.
Are there evening IOP sessions?
We offer morning and afternoon tracks. Contact admissions to confirm current schedule availability for your situation.
