Integrated dual diagnosis care runs inside our standard PHP and IOP schedules — same commute, same team, both conditions addressed in the same clinical day.

Co-occurring disorders care for OC

One team, one plan, both conditions.

Dual diagnosis — also called co-occurring disorders — means both mental health disorders and substance use disorders are treated as connected, because for most people they are. Depression and anxiety drive drinking; drinking worsens mood; trauma sits underneath both. Treating one without the other leaves the risk of relapse running.

High Tide integrates psychiatric care, addiction-informed therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills inside the same PHP or IOP structure Orange County clients already commute to. You’re not shuffled between a mental health program and separate addiction treatment with different teams and conflicting plans.

Our clinicians are trained in both domains. Groups include people working on similar overlaps — bipolar disorder and alcohol when outpatient care fits, anxiety and stimulants, trauma and whatever helped you survive it — without reducing anyone to a single label. Full clinical detail lives on our national dual diagnosis treatment page; this page is about Orange County access.

How the days work

Integrated days, Orange County evenings.

Substance use work and mental health work happen in the same sessions — not on alternating days.

Clinical day

Both addressed together

Individual therapy, psychiatry, and groups weave substance use and mental health targets into one plan — not two parallel addiction and mental health tracks.

Common questions

Dual diagnosis questions.

What is dual diagnosis treatment?

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time — also called co-occurring disorders care. At High Tide in Orange County, that happens inside PHP or IOP with one clinical team, not two siloed programs. Full program detail: /programs/dual-diagnosis-treatment.

Is dual diagnosis the same as co-occurring disorders?

In practice, yes — both phrases describe mental health and substance use disorders occurring together. We use both terms; the clinical model is integrated treatment for both conditions.

Do I need to be sober to start?

You need to be safe for outpatient care — not actively detoxing or in withdrawal requiring medical monitoring. We assess this on your first call and refer to detox partners when needed.

Is this an addiction rehab?

No. We’re a mental health PHP/IOP program with integrated dual diagnosis treatment. Evenings are always at home, not in a residential setting. Optional supportive housing is available when commuting is hard.

Can you treat both depression and alcohol use?

Yes — that’s the most common dual diagnosis presentation we see. One team, one plan, both conditions in the same clinical day. See also /what-we-treat/depression.

Does insurance cover dual diagnosis PHP/IOP in Orange County?

Most PPO plans cover integrated treatment at the same levels as standard PHP/IOP. We verify before you commit — start at /insurance.

What if I only have a mental health diagnosis on paper?

Clinical assessment matters more than billing codes. If substance use is part of your story, we treat it — whether or not it’s on your insurance card.

How long does dual diagnosis treatment take?

Similar timelines to standard PHP/IOP — weeks to a few months depending on level of care and progress, with step-down built in. Compare levels in /mental-health-guides/php-vs-iop.
